the sunflowers in profusion
welcome July's ending
August high Summer is coming
in garlands of gold and grain
cantaloups ripen and peaches pregnant
with wrinkled stones hold next year's harvest
beneath the cloudless sky
we wait for afternoons of tea
and bared feet under wisteria vines
these summer days flaunt a gradual brevity
against the heavy heat
that paints the mountains blue
